What Women Know About . . .appearance

Who cares what you look like?
I was on a wonderful weekend treat to a spa hotel with my friend. We had been released from mother and partner duties for two whole nights to lounge around and chat and eat and be pampered. It was my first time at a spa but my friends second so she used to the whole fluffy towel experience. I had come from a work meeting and then collection of my daughter and frantic packing and all I could think about was how hairy my legs were and concern whether or not I had packed a disposable razor in my bag. However on our first night we were too tired and giddy to do any major repair work so instead went straight down to dinner and drank wine for the evening. The next morning my room mate who has recently had a baby and is still in the post baby figure stage was feeling too self conscious to expose herself in her swim suit. I was more concerned about my hairy legs so had a pair of track suit bottoms underneath my fluffy towel. After breakfast we ventured into the spa area and she walked straight into a friend of hers that she hadn’t seen for years – she too was hiding under her fluffy towel.
“Oh you’ve caught me wearing my swimsuit that doesn’t fit me anymore!” she gasped to my friend. All my friend could think of was – you are a size 8 – what are you worrying about? All I could think was – you have waxed your legs – what are you complaining about? We all hid under the fluffy towels while we let the masseuse work on our feet – which we all felt were inoffensive enough to expose.
Later when we went for our walk my friend said how she felt so conscious of her weight and I realised that we are all so consumed by our own inadequacies that really nobody is interested in anyone elses. And anyone who is perfectly groomed and immaculate all of the time is wasting the effort because really we are all only thinking of ourselves! I found this liberating and later went down the spa in my swim suit and ditched the razor!
